Defining what ‘Integrative Medicine’ is and isn’t is an ongoing conversation that we are having in AIMA. Integrative medicine as a distinct philosophy of care has been recognised in Australia and New Zealand for almost 30 years. It was pioneered by doctors who believed a holistic approach to medicine would improve patient outcomes, these doctors wanted to treat the root causes of disease rather than medicating the symptoms. Driven by their passion that medicine could be done differently, these doctors largely educated themselves before establishing organisations like AIMA and ACNEM to more formally support integrative medicine through education, advocacy and collegiality.
